This is genuinely one of the most common questions we get from first-time Nepal travellers, and the good news is that the answer is simpler than most people expect, given the unique relationship between India and Nepal.

Do Indian Citizens Need a Visa?

No. Given the open border arrangement between India and Nepal, Indian citizens do not require a visa to enter Nepal by land or air. This is a longstanding bilateral arrangement and applies specifically to Indian nationals, not to other nationalities travelling from India.

What Documents Do You Actually Need?

A valid government-issued photo ID is required - Aadhaar card and voter ID are the most commonly used and accepted forms at the Sonauli crossing. While not mandatory, carrying a passport if you have one is a sensible precaution, since it's universally recognized and eliminates any ambiguity at the checkpoint.

What About Children Travelling with Family?

Children generally need their own valid ID as well - for younger children without an Aadhaar card, a birth certificate or school ID is often accepted, though carrying a passport for children is the most foolproof option if available.

Currency and Money Matters

Nepalese Rupee is the official currency, though Indian Rupees are widely accepted in tourist areas, hotels and larger establishments. That said, smaller vendors or rural stops may prefer local currency, so having some Nepalese Rupees on hand avoids any friction, particularly outside major tourist zones.

Vehicle-Specific Documentation

If you're travelling by private taxi, separate documentation applies to the vehicle itself for cross-border movement, distinct from your personal identity documents. This is typically handled by your tour operator, but it's worth confirming in advance whether your specific vehicle is authorized to cross directly or whether a vehicle change is required at the border.
