Kashmir genuinely offers a different experience depending on when you visit, and unlike some destinations where 'best time' is fairly universal, it really depends on what you specifically want to see - blooming gardens, snow-capped mountains, or a quieter, more affordable trip.

March-May: Spring Bloom

This period sees Srinagar's Mughal Gardens in full bloom, making it one of the most visually striking times to visit the city itself. Weather is generally mild and pleasant, though Gulmarg may still have some lingering snow patches from winter, which can actually be a nice bonus if you want both flowers and some snow in the same trip.

June-August: Summer Escape

Kashmir's summer offers a genuine escape from the heat found across most of North India during these months, with comfortable daytime temperatures throughout the valley. This is peak tourist season, so expect higher hotel rates and larger crowds at popular spots like Dal Lake and Pahalgam.

September-October: The Quieter Golden Window

This is often our top recommendation for travellers with flexible dates - the crowds thin out noticeably after peak summer, weather remains pleasant, and autumn colors add a different visual character to the valley, particularly around Srinagar's tree-lined avenues.

December-February: Winter and Snow

This is specifically when Gulmarg transforms into a genuine skiing destination, with reliable snow cover for skiing and snowboarding. Srinagar itself gets considerably colder, and some houseboats or hotels may have limited heating capacity, so confirming this specifically matters if you're travelling in peak winter.

Matching Season to Your Priority

If gardens and mild weather matter most, aim for March-May. If skiing or a genuine snow experience is the priority, December-February at Gulmarg specifically is worth the colder conditions. If you want to avoid both extreme crowds and extreme cold while still getting pleasant weather, September-October is genuinely underrated.
