With the Ram Mandir now a major pilgrimage destination, Gorakhpur to Ayodhya has become one of the most frequently travelled routes for us. It's also one of the more straightforward journeys we operate, given the well-maintained highway connecting the two cities.
The Distance and Route
Ayodhya sits approximately 135-140 km from Gorakhpur via NH-27, passing through Khalilabad, Basti and into Gonda district before reaching the city. This is a genuinely well-maintained state highway corridor, making it one of the more comfortable domestic routes we handle, without the winding hill sections you'd find on Uttarakhand or Himachal routes.
How Long Does the Drive Take?
Under normal traffic conditions, expect 3-4 hours one way. This manageable duration is exactly why a same-day round trip for darshan is genuinely practical for most pilgrims, rather than requiring an overnight stay - though staying overnight does let you experience the evening Saryu ghat aarti as well.
Best Time to Arrive for Darshan
Early morning arrival, ideally before 8-9 AM, helps you avoid the heaviest crowds that build up through the day, particularly on weekends and during festival periods. If you're specifically planning around a festival date, expect significantly higher crowd volume and plan extra time accordingly.
What Else to See in Ayodhya
Beyond the Ram Mandir itself, the Saryu River ghats are worth visiting, particularly for the evening aarti ceremony. Hanuman Garhi temple is another commonly visited site, typically combined with the main Ram Mandir darshan in a single day's itinerary.
Combining Ayodhya with Other Destinations
Given the reasonable distance and good road connectivity, Gorakhpur-Ayodhya-Varanasi has become a popular combined pilgrimage circuit for travellers wanting to cover both significant sites in one trip. The connecting drive between Ayodhya and Varanasi adds a further leg, but many pilgrims find the combination worthwhile given both cities' religious significance.
