Best Time to Visit Char Dham Yatra from Gorakhpur

Timing matters enormously for the Char Dham Yatra, given the high-altitude terrain and the fact that the temples themselves are only open for a specific window each year. If you're planning this pilgrimage starting from Gorakhpur, here's what to actually expect month by month.

The Yatra Season Overview

The Char Dham temples typically open in late April or early May and close by around Diwali in October-November, based on the Hindu calendar and weather conditions at these high-altitude sites. Outside this window, the temples are closed entirely, so your travel dates need to fall within this season regardless of other preferences.

May-June: Peak Season

This is the busiest period, coinciding with school summer holidays and generally stable weather before the monsoon arrives. Expect larger crowds at each Dham, particularly around long weekends, and book hotels well in advance. The weather is pleasant for road travel, though Kedarnath and Yamunotri can still be cold, especially in early May right after the temples open.

July-August: Monsoon Season

This period sees the heaviest rainfall, and with it, real landslide risk on the hill roads connecting the four Dhams. We generally advise against this window unless you have flexibility to delay if conditions worsen. Some pilgrims do travel during monsoon for smaller crowds, but this comes with genuine trade-offs in road safety.

September-October: The Second Good Window

Once the monsoon clears, September and early October offer some of the most stable weather of the entire season, with clearer mountain views and fewer crowds than the May-June peak. This is often our recommendation for pilgrims who have flexibility in their travel dates and want a more comfortable, less crowded yatra.

What About Gorakhpur's Own Weather?

Since your journey starts in Gorakhpur before reaching the yatra circuit, it's worth noting that Eastern UP's own monsoon (roughly June through September) can affect the initial Gorakhpur-Haridwar approach drive too, even if the higher altitude sections are clear. Checking regional weather for both legs of the journey - not just the mountain section - gives a more complete picture before you travel.
